A Working Paper Series of the Committee on Concepts and Methods

Ariel I. Ahram, "The Challenge of Conceptual Stretching in Mixed Method Research," May 2009
Abstract
Proponents of mixed methods point to shared standards as the basis for triangulating between qualitative and quantitative methods. Few, however, have examined the profound differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches to conceptualization and measurement and the danger of ‘stretching’ conceptual terms. This paper argues that conceptual stretching makes the goal of mutual validation between qualitative and quantitative methods that point in the same direction impossible. It then explores the idea of complementary validation, which seeks comprehensive perspective encompassing both correlation and mechanistic relationships, as a more viable but limited alternative strategy for mixed method research.
