| Abstract | | Ethnic politics are sensitive politics - the more salient, the more sensitive. This presents us with a problem: how can we ask people questions about ethnic politics and hope to get meaningful responses? Although difficult regardless of the method of data collection used, this issue is particularly acute on attitude surveys using a standardized questionnaire, the formalized and impersonal nature of which is not conducive to sensitive topics (especially among those holding sensitive opinions). This paper discusses the use of non-obtrusive indicators within the context of large-N surveys to measure sensitive and awkward concepts and demonstrates the use of such indicators in a study of the "Islam and democracy" question with original survey data collected in Lebanon in 2005. |
