C&M Call for Papers – IPSA 2014

The next biannual IPSA World Congress of Political Science will be held in Montreal from 19 through 24 July 2014, and Derek Beach (Aarhus University, Denmark) is serving as the C&M Program Convenor.

C&M is looking for panels and papers that address fundamental issues in concept formation, measurement, and research methodology from all methodological perspectives. C&M is a bridge-building group that brings together quantitative and qualitative, positivist and interpretivist, empirically and theoretically oriented scholars. Rather than focusing on methodology in a narrow, statistical sense, the group is interested in the whole process of research, from theory-formation to empirical testing in political science. While contemporary debates on conceptualization, operationalization, and measurement have mostly been led within the subfield of comparative politics, we are very much open to papers from other subdisciplines as well (i.e. American politics, international relations, and political theory).

In line with the general theme of IPSA 2014 – challenges of contemporary governance – papers and panels addressing the conceptualization, operationalization, and/or measurement of governance and/or globalization are very much encouraged. Papers and panels that address issues that span across the subfields are much encouraged. Papers can, but do not have to, have an empirical component, either qualitative or quantitative; however, purely theoretical exercises are not encouraged, as a clear argument about the empirical relevance of the discussed concept is considered crucial to the paper. Authors are encouraged to take up concepts that have broader disciplinary relevance and discuss them within more than one subdisciplinary field.

Please email your paper and panel proposals directly to Derek (Derek[at]ps.au.dk) by September 7, 2014 or contact him with any queries you may have.
